Day of Your LASIK Procedure

Before the day of your laser vision correction surgery with your Edmonton corneal specialist at Eye Q Premium Laser, you will receive an email confirmation detailing the date and time of your procedure, as well as helpful information about your procedure.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

You should expect to be at Eye Q Premium Laser for about three hours. You will need to arrange to have someone drop you off and pick you up from surgery. Wear comfortable clothing and style your hair in a way that makes it comfortable for you to lie down. Do not wear any makeup or earrings.

Laser eye surgeon at Eye Q LaserBefore the procedure, you meet with the refractive counsellor to go over your surgical consent form. The counsellor also reviews with you the instructions about how to care for your eyes after surgery. You are welcome to have a friend or family member present for this discussion. During this time, you also have the opportunity to ask any remaining questions you may have. The counsellor then processes any remaining balance you might owe for the payment of your surgery.

You then undergo a few more tests performed by an Eye Q Premium Laser ophthalmic technician. This includes SIRIUS corneal wavefront and Ocular wavefront (IRX 3) evaluations.

Once the preoperative tests are complete, you are outfitted with a gown and prepared for your procedure.

You next meet with Dr. Leong-Sit who reviews the morning’s test results and discusses your expected visual results from surgery. The knowledgeable laser eye surgeon explains what you can expect during the procedure. You have the opportunity to ask Dr. Leong-Sit any remaining questions you may have.

You are then brought into the operating room, where Dr. Leong-Sit (assisted by the Eye Q Premium Laser team) performs your surgical procedure. The laser eye surgeon will talk to you throughout surgery and keep you informed of what is happening at every step of the way.

Once your procedure is complete, you are moved to a room where you can comfortably recover for a while. Your first set of eye drops are administered, and your postoperative eye drop schedule is reviewed with you. You can have a light snack at this point, if you are hungry. Your authorized driver will be contacted if they are not already waiting for you at the clinic, which many drivers opt to do.

Dr. Leong-Sit examines your eyes one more time, and you are given a set of sunglasses to wear home. You are then released into the care of your driver, so you can rest in the comfort of your own home for the remainder of the day.

For the rest of the day, you must refrain from using your eyes. This means you cannot watch television, use a computer, tablet or phone, nor should you read or do anything that requires you to use your eyes.

In addition, you should administer your eye drops per the schedule given to you. You may want to have someone help you with this. You are free to nap after surgery — many patients do — but be sure to wake up periodically to apply your eye drops as directed.

What to Expect the Day After Surgery

The first morning following your surgery, you will return to the Eye Q Premium Laser office to meet with one of our trusted optometrists for your initial follow-up appointment. Note that you should have someone drive you to and from this appointment; you should not be driving quite yet. You should also still be wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes while they heal.

The optometrist examines your eyes and answers any questions you may have about the postoperative period. The optometrist also reviews your remaining eye drop schedule. He or she may change the type of eye drops or the frequency of use, depending on the progress of your recovery. Most patients are cleared to resume driving and return to work after this appointment.
