How to Prepare for Your LASIK Eye Surgery

Prepare for LASIK surgery

Preparing for your LASIK eye surgery appointment in Edmonton can be exciting and stressful at the same time. You probably feel excited about the idea of improved vision but may be nervous about the procedure. You can rest assured knowing that you will be under the best care with Dr. Joseph Leong-Sit of Eye Q Premium Laser. In the meantime, Dr. Leong-Sit offers the following tips to prepare for LASIK surgery.

Weeks Before Surgery

During your initial pre-op consultation with Dr. Leong-Sit, he will direct you to stop wearing your contact lenses and switch to eyeglasses. Contact lenses can distort the shape of your cornea, which could affect the outcome of your surgery.

If you wear soft contact lenses, you will have to stop wearing them at least two weeks before surgery.

If you wear rigid gas permeable (GP) lenses, you will be asked to stop wearing them three to four weeks before surgery. GP lenses can cause more significant corneal changes.

Dr. Leong-Sit will provide you a list of guidelines and materials regarding your LASIK surgery. Be sure to read these before your surgery. If you have any questions, call our Edmonton office and one of our trusted vision experts can assist you.

The Day Before Surgery

Remove all makeup, mascara, eyeliner and lotions from the area around the eyes the night before your surgery.

Use artificial tears to flush out any debris from your eyes.

Write down any questions you may still have for Dr. Leong-Sit and bring them with you to surgery.

The Day of Surgery

Have someone drive you to and from surgery. While your eyesight will be significantly better after surgery, you shouldn’t drive until Dr. Leong-Sit checks your vision the following day and tells you it is safe to drive.

Do not apply makeup or face lotions of any kind, and don’t wear perfume or cologne.

If you take medications, continue to do so the day of surgery unless Dr. Leong-Sit tells you otherwise.

You may be given pain medication or eye drops to keep your eyes comfortable after LASIK surgery. Take this medication as directed.

Post-Surgery Care

Arrange for someone to drive you to our Edmonton office the following day for your initial follow-up appointment.

Dr. Leong-Sit will examine your eyes and determine whether or not it’s safe for you to drive. He may change the type of eye drops you are using during your recovery. Be sure to ask Dr. Leong-Sit any questions you may have about your post-op recovery.
